Good health care is proven to reduce school absenteeism, keeping students in the classroom for continued learning and improved achievement.
The Frederick County Health Department, in close collaboration with Frederick County Public Schools, established Frederick County's first public school-based health center at Hillcrest Elementary in August 2009. It opened as the 65th school-based health center in Maryland.
Essentially a "doctor's office at a school," the center provides onsite comprehensive preventive and primary health services as well as mental health, oral health, ancillary and supportive services. Primary care providers, registered nurses and dental hygienists staff the center to address the pressing health needs of students in this school community.
Startup was funded through a two-year grant from the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission. The Frederick County Health Department provides the medical expertise, management, infrastructure and experience necessary to operate the health clinic. FCPS provides access to students, the space on school grounds to house the health clinic, and support and guidance from various individuals and departments within the school system. |
