High School Athletics
FCPS has nine high schools ranging in size from approximately 800 to 2,000 students. The high school athletic program consists of 23 varsity, 11 junior varsity and three ninth grade teams per school competing in 26 sports, in addition to cheerleading. FCPS employs over 400 coaches to supervise and teach the nearly 7,500 students who participate in the athletic program.
The FCPS Athletic Association regulates the inter-scholastic program, which is administered by the supervisor of athletics. The Association is composed of nine members, one principal from each school, who report to the Associate Superintendent for secondary schools.
Each FCPS high school has an Athletic Director that supervises and administers the school’s athletic program. All coaches are hired at the local school level. Prospective coaches should contact the local high school Athletic Director or go to coaching vacancies.
The athletics program is operated under the regulations of the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association, which is comprised of over 80,000 athletes and 180 member schools from nine districts. MPSSAA hosts 23 state tournaments each school year.
