Important Flu Information from FCPS
As you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu --- both seasonal and H1N1 --- in Frederick County Public Schools. We want to keep our schools open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season.
We are working closely with the Frederick County Health Department and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning schools. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available.
We are doing everything we can to keep our schools working as usual. Here are a few things you can do to help:
- Teach your child to wash his/her hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Teach your child not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.
- Teach your child to cover his/her coughs and sneezes with tissues. Cover up coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
- Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms include fever of 100°F or above, cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
- Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without benefit of fever-reducing medications. Keeping children with a fever at home will reduce the number of people who may get infected.
-
Any child who exhibits flu-like symptoms as stated above while at school will be sent to the health room for evaluation, and the parent/guardian will be contacted.

Vaccine is the primary means of prevention. If the flu becomes severe countywide: FCPS may implement one or more of the following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control:
