Pupil Personnel Services

Pupil Personnel Workers are trained to assess student needs, serve as student advocates and facilitate or provide appropriate services. PPWs recognize that behaviors such as absenteeism, disruption and disrespect as well as dysfunction in the family can prevent students from achieving their academic potential.  
 
Caring, Professional Advocacy   PPWs are highly skilled, certified professionals. They act as student/family advocates to:
  • Provide individual and family consultation for students with chronic attendance and/or discipline problems and work to prevent students from dropping out of school
  • Facilitate student placements in alternative education programs
  • Conduct home visits to promote family involvement
  • Respond to emergency welfare situations
  • Provide services for homeless students
  • Help parents resolve school-related and sensitive personal issues and interpret policies and regulations
  • File mediation conference with Assistant States Attorney in order to avoid district court charges
  • Petition cases to district court when families continually violate the Compulsory Education Law
  • Serve as members of each school’s student services team and provide crisis support
  • Assist in Federal Law 504 implementation
  • Participate in Individual Education Program meetings
  • Refer families to appropriate agencies for assistance 

Ensuring Equity and Consistency   PPWs also work to ensure equitable and consistent implementation of student-related laws, regulations, school policies and procedures. They:

  • Interpret student-related school policies, county policies and procedures
  • Validate information and/or conduct investigate certain suspensions
  • Collect data to determine bona fide residency
  • Facilitate multiple-family enrollments
  • Determine enrollment eligibility of non-resident and out-of-district students
  • Investigate custody/caretaker issues for resolution
