Graduation Information

Credit Requirements   FCPS requires a minimum of 25 credits to graduate.  This includes the minimum 21 credits beyond the 8th grade required by the Maryland State Board of Education and 4 additional credits that FCPS requires: 1 in math; and 3 career pathway credits for the class of 2009 and beyond. Requirements are outlined in the chart to the right.

High School Assessments (HSA)   The High School Assessments are state-level, end-of-course exams aimed at raising academic standards and preparing graduates to compete in the workplace and post-secondary education. Middle and high school students enrolled in Algebra/Data Analysis, English 10, Biology and Government must take the exams at the completion of each course. Passing the HSAs is a graduation requirement; students must achieve one of the following in order to receive a diploma:
  • pass the exams, or
  • earn a total combined score of at least 1602
Students can retake the HSAs as many times as necessary to pass. Extra help is available at all high schools, and Maryland's Bridge Plan is an alternative for some students who are unable to pass the exams despite receiving additional support. Discuss concerns with the school counselor or a teacher.

Graduation Honors   Students who excel are eligible for a number of FCPS and Maryland graduation honors.  Find out more here.
