Career & Technology Education

Career & Technology Education (CTE) programs are available at all high schools and the Career & Technology Center. They offer students who have identified specific career interests the opportunity to explore and prepare for their futures academically and through skill development and practical work experiences. Students may choose to enter employment immediately after high school, pursue post-secondary career education, or both. Talk with your school counselor about how to incorporate one of these programs into your high school plans, and see the High School Course Guide for a complete listing of offerings.

Technology Education   Students in grades 7-12 develop an understanding of the nature of technology and its impact on business, industry and society. They demonstrate knowledge and skills in engineering design and development and learn about the core technologies that are the building blocks of the designed world and how major enterprises use technology to produce goods and services.

Transition Education  These courses allow juniors and seniors to experience a hands-on career placement (within their career pathway) during the conventional school day. Businesses and community organizations interested in partnering with FCPS to offer work-based learning opportunities are invited to contact the CTE Coordinator.
Career Research & Development  (formerly Cooperative Work-Study)  This two-year program is available at all high schools and includes both an in-school component and a paid work experience in the senior year that reflects future employment plans. Most students attend their home high schools in the morning and work in the afternoon. Interested students should contact their high school Transition Education teacher coordinators to obtain an information and application packet.
Mentor/Internships   Juniors and seniors gain valuable career-related experiences in the field in which they plan to major in college. Each intern is paired with an adult mentor who helps craft the internship. Interested students should contact their high school Transition Education teacher coordinators to obtain an information and application packet.
